09-20-2004 - WidoSAT/ISAT - Windows XP SP2 - IMPORTANT NOTICE!

We have received the following notice from our satellite service partner regarding Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) and the WidoSAT satellite connection software:

Several weeks ago ISAT sent out instructions for configuring Windows XP Service Pack 2 so that it would function properly with the ISAT powered broadband service. These instructions were written after working with the beta version of XP SP2. More issues have come to light since the full version of XP SP2 has been released. These issues are not just related to ISAT’s software. Compatibility issues with over 50 major software packages have been recognized and acknowledged by Microsoft (these include both third party and Microsoft applications) and they are working to correct these. Many additional problems are foreseen:

A web search for "SP2 Problems" or "SP2 Issues" will reveal numerous additional links.

Many of the issues that ISAT has seen with SP2 have related to Internet Connection Sharing which allows multiple computers to share the satellite broadband Internet connection, but we have also experienced problems with stand-alone computer systems.

At this point, ISAT’s recommendation is to postpone installing Windows XP Service Pack 2 on any computers until these problems are resolved.....

We are sorry for the inconvenience and hope that Microsoft can correct these issues soon.

Widomaker suggests delaying the installation of Windows XP Service Pack 2 (XP SP2) on Satellite connected computers until these issues have been resolved. Microsoft has a tool which will block the automatic installation of XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) via Automatic Update (AU) for 8 months (from Aug 16th, 2004) while allowing other critical updates to continue to be installed. Click the link below and select OPEN when prompted to download "BlockXPSP2.EXE" from "download.microsoft.com"...
